What is the deal with these small bedroom closets. I think I have just gotten spoiled with my past homes. I have always had a large walk in closet.

There seems to be no in between. Either your home has really small closets or walk in closets. I’m assuming your here because you are in the same boat as me.

With the possibility of moving my family and I maybe losing closet space. Currently I have 3 small bedroom closets which is a lot of space for us.

With that being said, I figured I better start researching how to organize a small closet now because I don’t want to be completely blind sided if we do move.

Once I began researching small closet organization ideas I realized I am already utilizing most of the ideas below.

The only additional thing we could do is to store non seasonal clothes away – in a garage or outside storage unit. Anyways back to you, so what to do with those small closets.

1. Over the Door Shoe Organizer for your Small Closet

Now I wish we could use a over the door shoe organizer but we have these over sized thick wood doors that over the door storage hangers just don’t fit on. So instead we had to get a 5 tier shoe organizer which sits in the corner of our room taking up space.

Now of course you could store you shoes on the closet floor. But more than likely you have more shoes than you could possibly fit in that small amount of space. Which is where an over the door shoe organizer comes in handy.

2. Plastic Storage Bins for Organizing your Small Closet

Plastic storage bins are super helpful for storing different items and mementos. There are a lot of different varieties of plastic storage bins and they are great for making use of that top shelf in your closet.

I used dollar tree plastic storage bins they are perfect for storing photos, small electronics, belts, and ties. I love them because they are $1, have lids, and they can be stacked. This helps to maximize your closet shelf space.

3. Baskets for Organizing your Small Closet

Baskets are helpful for top of the closet storage also. They come in a variety of sizes which means you can store even more items in them. I personally like the look of mixing baskets and plastic storage bins.

I purchase several dollar tree baskets to store clothes, nail supplies, hair care tools, handbags, and belts. The only issue I ran into with the baskets is that they are not stack able. Which can at times prove to be a pain. So you definitely want to plan out your use of baskets versus plastic storage bins.

Also make sure you get a basket that is not to big for your shelf. Because the last thing you want is to open your closet door and get hit on the head. Just saying, it happens.

4. Cube storage for Organizing your Small Closet

I love cube storage units. They have been proven to be super useful for us. We have had our – 2 three cube storage unit – for over 5 years now. Originally it was for bathroom storage, but now that we have a smaller bathroom we relocated it to our small bedroom closet.

This is a versatile and sturdy storage option that you can either put on display or put in your closet depending on your closet layout. Of course this cube units work best when paired with cloth baskets.

You can store just about anything in this unit from clothes, hair products, medicine, or even personal hygiene products. And the good thing is no one will know the difference.

5. Closet Hanging Organizer for your Small Closet

I have been using a closet hanging organizers for over 10 years. For a long time the only drawer space I had was nightstands so I need a place where I could store my folded clothes. This closet hanging organizers – that I purchased at Walmart – is an affordable space saver.

I have one in every room – one for me, my husband, and my daughter. As often as we declutter our clothes and donate we still manage to always have more clothes than I can fit in dresser drawers. These organizers are a must have for us.

If you have limited space but a lot of clothes than this is the must have.

6. Space Saver Closet Hanger

The space saver closet hangers are ingenuous. Depending on how many you need it can be a bit of an investment.

But even if you only purchase 2 space saver closet hangers. You will have increased your hanging ability from 2 to 10 items – in most cases. Which is pretty awesome if you ask me.

7. Hanging Hooks for Organizing your Small Closet

I love the idea of hanging hooks to create more space in a small closet. But I have seen a lot of small closets so I know that this may or may not be an option for you.

You can try hanging the rod on the wall – if you have space – or on the inside of your closet door. But only do this if you are comfortable with a drill because the last thing you want to do is ruin your place. Especially if you’re renting. Because you don’t want to do anything that will prevent you from getting your security deposit back in full, just saying.

I hope this inspired you to organize your small closet and enjoy your home. Use this post as inspiration and create a shopping list. Once you grab your items, decide on a date, and get started with organizing that mess you call a closet. No judgement here believe me I completely understand more than you know.

Once you’re done you will be happy to open your closet door and not be hit over the head with items falling from the top of your shelf.

I love having square footage as much as the next person but it’s not every thing. So let’s be good stewards with the space we have now. Because when you get in your forever home you will appreciate having more space that much more.
