10 Scriptures for Grief and Loss

10 Scriptures for Grief and Loss

Today I’m sharing 10 scriptures for grief and loss. Grief, failure, heartache, disappointment, death.

The list goes on, but all are trials we will experience in life. If we listen to the world, it is easy to feel defeated in these moments.

Recently, I asked Rose what she wanted for dinner. She immediately exclaimed “pizza”. I ordered pizza and as usual added a side item.

I try to mix it up and try different sides each time. Since pizza is one of the few places that delivers near us. Help arrived – my mother-in-law which meant I was able to enjoy pizza and an episode of “All Rise” while the kiddos entertained their grandma.

While eating my pizza and breadsticks I remembered a prior time I had breadsticks. I was around 16 years old and visiting family in Bearden, Arkansas which is a small town with a population of 1500.

The only landmarks are the corner store which is also a gas station and railroad.

Yonda (my cousin), Keshia (my sister), and I had walked to The Corner to get something to eat. We got a Hunt’s pizza and breadsticks. To this day, I have no clue why this memory stands out.

When I was in college, Yonda passed away in a car accident. As I sat their eating my dinner, realizing that we would never raise babies together.

Grief hit me.

Most days I go on and I don’t think much about her. But on the days, I do my heart gets so heavy. More than 10 years later and grief still hits me sometimes.

Grief is a process. But God is a healer of all things. Today I’m sharing 10 scriptures to help you comfort you through grief and loss.

10 Scriptures for Grief and Loss

  1. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. John 16:22 ESV

  3. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Romans 8:18 ESV
  4. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Psalms 34:18 ESV
  5. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
  6. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalms 147:3 ESV
  7. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:4-6 ESV
  8. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4 ESV
  9. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. 2 Corinthians 1:3-6
  10. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

Often, I wonder will this feeling ever go away or is this just what grief look likes.

A healed wound, that at the thought of a memory feels like someone ripped the scab off without any warning.

But God wants to encourage us. He wants us to remember the trials Jesus encountered on Earth. You need to know that if Jesus overcame so can you.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

John 16:33 ESV
