The most frequently asked question over the last year has been, how did I grow my hair? Honestly for a while I truly wasn’t sure how I got to this point myself. My hair has grown significantly in the last year not just in length but also in volume.
I made some changes to my routine but was not expecting to see major results. My husband had grown a bit tired of my protective styling and asked that I wear my hair out. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I wore my hair out for the first time in months. Here are the 7 things I changed in my routine that helped me grow healthy hair and retain length.
Protect your Hair
- The best thing you can do for your hair is to reduce manipulation.
- If you don’t like protective styling, wearing your twists or braids in a bun for several days is a great way to reduce manipulation and extend the life of your twist/braid out.
- Never comb, finger comb, or brush your hair while it is dry. Just don’t do it.
- Be careful with you ends. Tuck your ends whenever possible. Choose styles that do not cause friction on your ends.
- If you have fine hair, I recommend only using shower combs and finger detangling. Tools like a paddle brush or denman brush can really damage and break off your fine strands if used improperly or too frequently.
- After cleansing your hair, use a moisturizing method that works best for your hair. If you have fine hair, I recommend WLCO or WLO.
- Water + Leave in conditioner + Cream + Oil
- Best for twist outs, braid outs, or flat twist outs.
- Water + Leave in conditioner + Oil
- Best for Wash and gos, protective styling, and stretching hair.
- I recommend using a heavy oil like castor oil for protective styling.
- Water + Leave in conditioner + Cream + Oil
- Every night before bed spray your hair with water and follow with your favorite oil to seal in the moisture.
- Personally I loves using a Water Mist mine usually includes 3/4 Water, 1/8 Aloe Vera Gel, and 1/8 Castor Oil.

- Avoiding heat is very beneficial for retaining length.
- By removing heat exposure you reduce the likeness of damage.
- Avoiding heat also helps reduce the amount of hair that needs to be trimmed.
- How can you trim your hair without straightening it first? Stretch your hair using banding or even twist/braids. Trimming on stretched hair is just as effective as trimming straight hair.
- In my personal experience I stopped using heat (including blow dryers, straighteners, and curlers) in the last year. - When using protein treatments it is important to monitor your hair.
- There are a variety of DIY and store bought protein treatments with varying strengths.
- If you’ve never done a protein treatment starting with a light protein is key. Here are a few options:

- Early on in my natural hair journey I completely avoided protein treatments. Primarly because I didn’t understand there purpose and how to best use them in my routine. In the last year I added protein treatments to my regimen and it has strengthen my strands significantly.
- Make a habit of massaging your scalp on wash days.
- Scalp massages promote hair growth.
- Scalp massages can be performed using your finger tips or a massaging brush.
- Scalp massages are also a great way to relieve headaches and itchy scalp. Typically I coat my fingers with oil and massage it in to relieve itchy scalp.
- Drinking water helps not only hydrate your body but also promotes hair growth.
- The general rule of thumb is to drink at least 3 glasses of water a day.
Take care of yourself!
- Stay fit.
- Eat right.
- If your diet does not provide all the daily nutrition necessary make sure you supplement by adding multivitamins to your routine.
